So why are Artline pens too good to stay put, what makes them the best?

From the finest line to the boldest statement, there is an Artline solution for every creative writing, drawing and marking challenge. They are comfortable, practical, high performance pens and markers – no wonder they always disappear!

Many of us would know the smell of a marker anywhere – it’s that strong and familiar sweet aroma that reminds you of paint or even varnish. That signature odour is actually caused by a colourless liquid called Xylene which is used as a solvent in some pens and markers. The solvent helps the ink flow from the barrel to the page, and evaporates after it is exposed to the open air.

What you may not have noticed is that Artline has stopped using Xylene in most of its products and has substituted the traditional solvent with an alcohol. The only obvious difference is the smell – whereas Xylene has a sweet aroma, the alcohol has a more neutral odour.

The reason behind Artline’s move away from using Xylene as a solvent is because of a concern amongst some community members that the product could cause negative health effects. In 1996 the U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry found that if a person were to be exposed to a high level of Xylene (such as in a paint factory) there was a risk of symptoms such as “”irritation of the skin, eyes, nose and throat.”" So why risk their customers or their factory staff when there is an alternative. Artline really do have a heart.

Helpful Hints

If you accidentally write on your clothes or children colour in your new carpet, the first thought many of us would have is to wash the stain off as quickly as possible. Don’t! Wetting an ink stain actually sets the mark on the fabric, probably ruining your clothes (or carpet!) for good. Instead, take your stained fabric to a dry cleaner or call a professional carpet cleaner and tell them whether permanent or water-based ink was the culprit.

Don’t be tempted to use off-the-shelf cleaning products, because most involve having to wet the fabric, which could make the stain lighter but even bigger. Another remedy some people use to remove ink from fabric is to layer hair spray on the stain which sometimes breaks down the mark, allowing it to be soaked up by a tissue or paper towel. Baby wipes have also been known to produce similar results. If you want to try either of these techniques, ensure the fabric is lying flat – if you hold the fabric up whilst using the hair spray or wipes, the ink will run down the article making the stain even bigger.

Please note however, Office 365 do not recommend using hair spray or baby wipes on stains simply because the variations in product formulas, fabrics and inks are so great it is better to leave it to the experts.
