The Importance of Good Office Lighting

Never underestimate the importance of good lighting in the office. As an employer you are responsible for the wellbeing of your staff while they are at work. This means that your employees comfort needs to be considered and this covers a wide spectrum, lighting being one area.
A dimly lit room creates a negative mood in most situations. You must consider that if there is poor lighting, the eye muscles will have to work harder and in turn work productivity is diminished. You can also expect your staff to complain of headaches and tiredness resulting in time off work and a loss in your time and inevitably money! It is recommended that lighting levels in the office must be a minimum of 450 Lux (Lux is the ‘International System of Units’ unit for lighting). Be aware of screen glare, this can obviously cause problems with reading the monitor and so if overhead lights are reflected in the screen turn them off! Instead use a different form of lighting, for instance uplighters or desk lamps.
The perk to using a desk lamp is that individual workstations and team arrangements can have their own lighting focussed in areas where it is needed. Lighting can be adjusted to the individual, rather than the room which can save in energy costs too! With good working light you can be sure that productivity will increase, concentration will be enhanced and you will see a reduction in errors.
When choosing your desk lamp remember you will have 4 choices of light sources, each one offering different qualities;
- Incandescent Lighting – The standard light bulb offering affordability to all, a range of fitting options and an approximate life span of 1000 hours.
- Halogen Lighting – A great alternative to the incandescent light bulb offering 5 times as much light and a life span which is twice as long. Producing a very bright ‘sunlight’ light, these bulbs are very small and must not be touched by the hand – when fitting use a rag or cloth of some kind to protect the bulb from your skin; your skin touch will lessen its life span.
- Fluoroscent Lighting – An efficient light source offering low power consumption and a life span of about 8000 hours!
- LED (Light Emitting Diodes) Lighting – With the longest life span of approximately 100,000 hours, this form of lighting will save you a fortune in the long run!

So it turns out you’re after more on desk lamps! With this being the case, it’s best to bring you a brand that you’ve all heard off…Helix of course! Only this time we’ve chosen you a rather classy option or more specifically, an executive option. The

Did you know that lighting in many work places is rarely sufficient. An office with fluorscent lighting generally gets about 300 Lux. (According to Wikipedia, Lux is the ‘International System of Units’ unit for lighting.) Most people don’t realise that the recommended minimum is 450 Lux.
