Which Envelope?!

Choosing the right envelope for your letter or document is never easy, not unless you understand how the envelope sizes correspond with paper sizes! However it really is very simple, once you know!
Most people look for the perfect envelope to enclose an A4 document. But first you must think about how you would like your document to be enclosed. Are you looking to post your papers without folding them, or would you like an envelope that takes your A4 sheets folded once? Alternatively, and most popularly within business environments, there are those envelopes which take A4 sheets folded in three parts. It all sounds like it could be quite confusing, but I assure you, it will all make sense! Take a look at our most common envelope sizes:
C4 Envelopes – C4 is the envelopes version of A4, it is made to complement A4 paper perfectly without requiring that the page is folded. These are perfect for when the contents of the envelope must not be folded and must remain pristine. Dimensions – 324mm x 229mm (12¾” x 9″).
C5 Envelopes – As with C4 envelopes, C5 is the envelopes version of A5 and these envelopes are intended to be used with A5 paper UNFOLDED or alternatively with A4 format paper FOLDED ONCE. Normally used to post leaflets and small brochures, the dimensions of the C5 are 229mm x 162mm (9″x 6⅜”).
C6 Envelopes – As with C5 and C4 envelopes, C6 is the envelopes version of A6 and is designed to work with A6 format paper UNFOLDED, or alternatively with A5 format paper FOLDED ONCE, or A4 format paper FOLDED TWISE. These have many uses however most commonly are used to issue wages and payslips. Dimensions – 114mm x 162mm (4½” x 6⅜”).
DL Envelopes – The DL envelope is the most popular business envelope used to post professional documents, letters, invoices, statements and most any papers. They takes a sheet of A4 format paper folded TWISE into thirds or A5 paper FOLDED ONCE. It’s not easy at first to fold your A4 sheets to fit these envelopes, there’s almost an art to it. Carefully bend the letter without actually folding it into an ‘S’ shape, adjusting it until the three sections look the same size. To be entirely sure, check your folded sections against the envelope to make sure it will fit. Once you have found your three equal parts press down to a permanent fold and you’re done. Dimensions – 110mm x 220mm (4⅓” x 8⅔”).
