Still Confused About Envelope Sizes?

It seems that our customers are finding that they are still having difficulties understanding these tricky envelope sizes…I’m not surprised! Let’s see what we can do about that.

The C series is used only for envelopes and is defined in ISO 269. The area of C series sheets is the geometric mean of the areas of the A and B series sheets of the same number; for instance, the area of a C4 sheet is the geometric mean of the areas of an A4 sheet and a B4 sheet. This means that C4 is slightly larger than A4, and B4 slightly larger than C4. The practical usage of this is that a letter written on A4 paper fits inside a C4 envelope, and a C4 envelope fits inside a B4 envelope.

Whether you’re looking for C4 envelopes, C5 envelopes or C6 envelopes, you won’t have any difficulties finding them here. Take a look at the table below for the exact measurements – it should help.

Okay, let’s make these paper sizes more clear…

Like many of you, I’ve been confused about these paper sizes for years, the only reason I now know them is so that I can explain it to you, so listen up…

The international paper size standard, ISO 216, is based on the German DIN 476 standard for paper sizes. ISO paper sizes are all based on a single aspect ratio of square root of 2, or approximately 1:1.4142. The base format is a sheet of paper measuring 1 m² in area (A0 paper size). Successive paper sizes in the series A1, A2, A3, and so forth, are defined by halving the preceding paper size (More on the mathematics behind the A series paper sizes). The most frequently used paper size is A4 (210 × 297 mm).

Below is a chart which illustrates the actual measurement of all the ‘A’ sizes available.

The most commonly used are A4 paper, A5 Paper and A6 paper.
