Swine Flu – Steps to Protect Your Business

With Swine Flu on the increase it is becoming more and more important to take measures to prevent and beat it in every scenario possible, including the work place.

Swine flu is far more widespread than official figures suggest and is causing the severest illness in children, young adults and pregnant women, international evidence shows. A worrying example emerged when a 37-year-old man critically ill in hospital in Glasgow was confirmed as having swine flu, and five members of his family are being viewed as possible cases. It must be advised how easily spread this virus is. Preventing the spread in the office will help a great deal in preventing the spread at home and infecting our families. The man, who has not been named, was admitted to intensive and has a serious underlying illness. The worrying fact is that he is not known to have had contact with any swine flu cases or travelled recently.

The majority of cases continue to be mild, although 840 people have been hospitalised and 26 people have died.

Swine flu, like seasonal flu, is easily spread by the tiny droplets in a cough or sneeze. By taking a few simple steps you can help to reduce the risk of getting swine flu and to stop the virus spreading.

The more your employees know about how to prevent infection, the more resilient your business will be. To help minimise the risk of spreading the disease you could consider providing the following, encouraging their usage and ensure staff are aware of the following hygiene procedures;

  • Cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing, using a tissue
  • Throw the tissue away quickly and carefully
  • Wash your hands regularly with soap and water
  • Antiseptic hand gel dispensers for each member of staff or in key locations such as the kitchen and/or reception areas. Soap and water is perfectly effective but these dispensers may be more convenient
  • Antiseptic wipes to keep all common work areas germ-free including telephones, keyboards, door handles and work surfaces.
  • Put signs up to remind employees and visitors of their responsibilities to maintain personal hygiene
  • Continue running air conditioning systems as normal if provided
